HOW TO KNOW IF IT'S RIPE?

It is a personal struggle of mine going to the fruit section of the supermarket. I am not talking about the logistics of getting there (or the resources, for that matter), I am referring to the time it takes for me to choose the right fruits. My grandma always says that the less green, the better. But how does her motto apply to fruits that can't even get green?

With a little patience and research, I have now found some tips that have worked for me when buying my fruits. Read on!

Apples

The ones at the store will already be ripe, but if you want to be extra sure, put the apple in a plastic bag. This will help speed up the ripening.

Bananas

The spottier, the better. Some people are afraid of picking dirty/spotty bananas. All I have to say is: fear not, these are the sweetest. This being said, steer clear of green bananas, your toilet will thank you.

Clementines

I can't tell you the many times I have been disappointed about the inside of a cutie. Now I make sure that their exterior feels a bit oily and that they are slightly loose but firm (if that makes sense).

Dragon Fruit

This was my favourite fruit last year. Unfortunately, dragons are hard to find, so my bond with watermelon grew stronger. Look for the evenly coloured and not-too firm ones!

Honeydew Melon

Take one and rub it--that's right. Does it feel waxy? Another way to tell that it is ready to be eaten is by tapping it gently and hearing a hollow sound.

Pineapple

As grandma said, the less green, the better. Look for the golden ones!

Strawberry

Smell it. If it smells like flowers, that is the right one. Strawberries always tend to look good, so really channel your smelling abilities for this one.

Watermelon

Or should I say, what a melon. My favourite fruit of the moment is ripe when it has a hollow sound when you tap on it.
